Also, because the worms continually eat through the waste in the stacked trays, compost is produced at a faster rate than traditional methods of composting.

Produces the Best Compost: The best compost for your garden is all-natural, nutrient-rich compost produced by worms. The Worm Factory® worm compost bin creates the high-quality compost that will help your garden thrive!

Description:

Worm composting is an incredibly efficient way to convert kitchen scraps, junk mail and cardboard into nutrient-rich compost for your garden. Master gardeners agree that compost produced by worms will produce the best results and help your plants thrive!

The Worm Bin Factory's® unique stackable, multi-tray design makes it the most efficient worm bin composter around. Worms begin eating waste in the lowest tray, and then migrate upward as food sources in that tray are exhausted. By allowing worms to migrate upward, the worms separate themselves from the finished compost that is ready for the garden.

Besides the worm castings that are produced through this process, the Worm Factory® also produces a second type of compost. As waste is broken down, moisture filters through your Worm Factory, taking nutrient-rich particles with it. This liquid fertilizer, know as leachate is gathered in the special collection tray of the Worm Factory® and can easily drained from the spigot.

Specifications:

  • Measures 16" x 16" x 21" for a 3 tray system, 3.5" higher for each tray added
  • The trays, base, and lid are made from high-quality post-consumer recycled plastic
  • Operational in temperatures between 45 and 85 degrees

How It Works:

Simply add a handful of worms and your organic waste to the bottom tray. The worms will start processing the food. Once the bottom tray is filled add another tray. The worms migrate upward to the newest food source leaving the bottom tray full of nutrient rich compost.

As waste is broken down, moisture filters through the system, taking nutrient-rich particles with it. You can drain organic liquid fertilizer right from the spigot.

Articles on the worm factory® worm bin

Daily Updates on this article

Making use of a worm factory® worm bins has its benefits which includes among other things, creating fertilizer for your garden, and of course limiting the amount of garbage that actually ends up in our landfills. There are some important considerations when you set out to establish a worm factory worm bin however and that is the scope of this article.

Worm Composting Bins

Not everyone has the space outdoors in which to place a worm bin, so today we’re going to look at some alternative setups that are equally as effective in composting your food wastes and turning them into nutrient rich fertilizer. Many different types of worm bins containers can be used, and you are limited only to your own imagination as to which container to use to put your worms to work.

As long as the basic requirements are met, there is really no restriction as to what you can use. Some things people have used as worm bins are:

Storage tub  - Trash cans  - Wooden boxes - Old bathtubs - Barrels cut in half

Still others exercise the option of buying the Worm Factory® worm bin because it comes equipped with everything you need to get started. It’s really all a matter of personal taste and how involved you want to become in the composting processes. Regardless of what you choose to use however, worm bins can be placed virtually anywhere, because as long as they are properly maintained, they are virtually odorless. Some people have even placed worm bin in their homes so they are able to compost organic material year round.

Once you have that much completed, it’s time to consider what you will use for worm bedding. Again, you can readily find materials for this right there in your home in the form of newspapers. Shred these up and they make perfect worm bedding. Add to these shredded newspapers a little dirt and sprinkle some water in there to moisten the area and you’re ready to go. ( Remember use only black and white sheet no color or glossy sheet. )

Now you want to add your organic composting material to your worm composting bins. As a general rule of thumb, 2 pounds of redworms will eat about a pound of organic material in about a week’s time. When you put your organic material into your worm compost bin, never put meat or anything like that in there. You want to be sure to stick with organic material such as fruit and vegetable scraps, organic material from out of the garden and things like that. Now you want to place your worms directly on top of that and then cover the container.

As a general rule of thumb, worms prefer, and actually perform better where it is dark. You’ll notice that they will "dive" into the bedding material when exposed to light, and if there is visible light, then they are less likely to compost your organic material.
