Redworm Tips

Harvesting redworms made easy. Setup a table in very bright light pile the bedding up with a cone shape pile on it and wait about 10 to 15 minutes. Start buy scraping off the top a little at a time untill you get to the worms on the bottom. The first thing a redworm does when you dig the bedding is to goes towards the bottom, once they get there is they gather together for easy picking. The left over bedding worm casting can then be put on your plants. Or if you like you can start another worm bed with it there will be some very small worms and worm eggs and this will be the start of a new worm bed.

Rabbit manure is some great stuff I just started using it on my worm beds about 2 weeks as of this writing. I noticed the redworms were eating this stuff up I also seen that the worms are much bigger good bait size. This is great news a happy worm will breed good and make the worm egg production go up meaning a jump in the redworms population.

I was greatful to find a source of rabbit manure close by and the price was great to $5.00 a pickup truck load I was happy. I believe if you raise rabbits and you put redworms under the rabbit cages this will do three things 1) you can have a second income from the sale of redworms. 2) Redworms will reduce odors from the rabbits. 3) You will have great worm castings/compost to sell are use in your own garden.

When feeding redworms I have seen that using manure (horse, cow, rabbit ) works real good I just spread about 2 to 3 inches on top of the beds. I do not even turn the beds before applying the manure this save on labor and time. It is best to get the manure wet first then put it on top of the beds, this way the worms will work right up into the fresh manure.

The one thing I like about growing redworms verses other kinds of livestock is that you can grow redworms anywhere and they do not have to be look after each and every day, Livestock on the other hand needs to be look out for every day.

I have been gone for 2 weeks at a time and came home to find my redworms the same way I left them.
